Overview#
The Gillette T4D-1000 is a 100-kilowatt Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V dual-certified diesel generator on Volvo Penta's TAD581VE — a 5.13L turbocharged inline-4 with SCR aftertreatment and DEF injection. Rated at 100 kW for both standby and prime duty. Stamford UCI274E alternator, Basler DGC-2020 controller.
The T4D series is Gillette's emissions-compliant diesel lineup for non-emergency applications where EPA mandates Tier 4 Final compliance. Unlike the Tier II/III models (SPVD, SPD, SPJD), the T4D units include SCR catalyst systems requiring diesel exhaust fluid.
Tier 4 Final — what's different from Tier III#
The T4D-1000 adds several systems not present on Tier III diesel generators:
- SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) — reduces NOx emissions using DEF injection into the exhaust stream
- DEF tank and injection system — requires regular DEF refilling (5-9% of diesel consumption)
- Aftertreatment housing — adds 74 inches to the unit length vs. comparable Tier III models
- Onboard diagnostics — the engine management monitors SCR performance and can derate if DEF quality degrades
Our service experience#
The T4D Tier 4 Final Volvo engines are the same platform used in newer Kohler and Blue Star generators meeting current emissions requirements. The DEF system adds a maintenance item not present on Tier III units — DEF quality and level monitoring become part of each service visit. We recommend DEF inventory management (shelf life ~2 years) and temperature-controlled storage for DEF in warm climates.
