Overview#
The Gillette SPVD-5000 is a 500-kilowatt stationary diesel standby generator on Volvo Penta's TAD1641GE — the 16.1L inline-6 that begins the larger Volvo platform used from 500 to 700 kW. This is the same engine platform used in Blue Star VD-series generators at identical output levels. Stamford HCI534 alternator, Basler DGC-2020 controller.
At 500 kW, this transitions from the 12.8L enclosure to a larger footprint (152 x 72 x 80 in open vs. 132 x 52 x 65 in for the 12.8L models).
The Volvo 16.1L platform — 500 to 600 kW#
The TAD16xx/TWD16xx 16.1L powers three SPVD models:
| Model | Engine | Aspiration | Standby kW | Emissions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPVD-5000 | TAD1641GE | Air-to-air aftercooled | 500 | Tier II |
| SPVD-5500 | TAD1642GE | Air-to-air aftercooled | 550 | Tier II |
| SPVD-6000 | TWD1644GE | Water-to-air aftercooled | 600 | Tier II |
The SPVD-6000 notably switches from air-to-air to water-to-air aftercooling (indicated by the "TWD" prefix) to achieve 600 kW from the same 16.1L displacement.
Our service experience#
The Volvo 16.1L at 500 kW is a platform we service extensively on Blue Star VD generators. The Delphi E3 fuel injection and EMS 2.2 engine management are transparent and well-documented. At 500 kW, this engine is comfortably within its output envelope (302 psi BMEP) — less stressed than the 400 kW 12.8L at 340 psi BMEP. Annual load bank testing and fuel quality management are standard service items.
