Overview#
The Gillette SPVD-5500 is a 550-kilowatt stationary diesel standby generator — the mid-point of the 16.1L Volvo TAD16xx platform. The TAD1642GE produces 749 bhp from 16.1L displacement. Stamford HCI534F alternator, Basler DGC-2020 controller.
This model bridges the SPVD-5000 (500 kW, TAD1641) and SPVD-6000 (600 kW, TWD1644) — the three models represent the full 16.1L output range before stepping to 17.3L at 700 kW.
The 16.1L at 550 kW — a moderate calibration#
At 331 psi BMEP, the TAD1642GE operates at a moderate specific loading for 16.1L — higher than the 500 kW TAD1641 (302 psi) but lower than the 600 kW TWD1644 (369 psi). This positions the SPVD-5500 as the balanced option in the 16.1L range for facilities that need more than 500 kW but can't justify the jump to 600 kW.
Our service experience#
The TAD1642 is the same Volvo 16.1L platform we service on Blue Star VD-series generators. At 550 kW, the engine has good thermal margin and responds well to standard diesel maintenance. The older ASCE 7-05 wind certification is worth noting for coastal or high-wind installations — verify current certification status with Gillette if wind load compliance is a project requirement.
