Overview#
The Gillette SPMI-1.5M is a 1,500-kilowatt (1.5 MW) stationary diesel standby generator — the second-largest in Gillette's catalog. It uses Mitsubishi's S16R V16 diesel at 65.37L displacement, producing 2,346 bhp at standby. Stamford AVK S7L1DC alternator with PMG excitation, DSE 7420 MKII with UL 6200.
At 1.5 MW, this is a utility-class standby generator: large data centers requiring multi-megawatt backup, major hospital campuses, industrial plants, and campus-wide emergency power distribution. Available in 480V and 600V three-phase only.
The Mitsubishi S16R — V16 at 65 liters#
The S16R is Mitsubishi's largest industrial diesel platform, used in the SPMI-1.5M and SPMI-2M:
- 65.37L V16 — 3,989 cu in, 60-degree vee configuration
- 6.69" bore × 7.09" stroke — larger bore and stroke than the S12 series
- Dual Mitsubishi PS8-type fuel injection — Mitsubishi's own fuel system (not Bosch like the S12 series)
- Water-to-air aftercooling — consistent with the S12 platform
- 14.5:1 compression ratio — optimized for the larger displacement
At 34,450 lbs open (17.2 tons), this unit requires significant structural and logistics planning.
1.5 MW installation — a different scale#
The SPMI-1.5M operates at a different installation scale than anything in the SP, SPD, SPJD, or SPVD series:
- No enclosure option — typically installed in a purpose-built generator room with acoustic treatment
- 480V/600V only — medium-voltage distribution via step-up transformers for campus systems
- 127 gal/hr fuel consumption — requires 5,000-10,000 gallon on-site storage for 48+ hour autonomy
- 20 ft × 8.5 ft footprint — the generator room must accommodate this plus maintenance clearances
Our service experience#
At 1.5 MW, the SPMI-1.5M is a facility-class asset requiring a dedicated operations team or a structured maintenance contract. We approach these installations with a formal maintenance plan: semi-annual full-load testing, quarterly fuel system service, monthly exercising, and continuous remote monitoring via the DSE 7420 MKII's Modbus interface. The V16's 16-cylinder fuel injection system requires meticulous fuel quality management.
