Overview#
The Blue Star VD550-04FT4 is a 550-kilowatt standby / 500-kilowatt prime EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage 5 diesel generator built around the Volvo Penta TWD1682GE — a 16.12-liter inline-six with water-cooled charge-air cooling. This is the first model in the Blue Star Tier 4 Final lineup where standby and prime ratings diverge, and the first to use the large TWD engine platform.
The jump from the 12.8L TAD engines (VD250-300) to the 16.12L TWD platform represents a fundamental change in engine architecture — the water-cooled charge-air cooler (H2O-to-Air CAC) replaces the air-to-air aftercooler used on all smaller T4F models. The physical package is correspondingly larger: 160 x 84 x 118 in versus 120 x 66 x 91 in for the VD300.
The Volvo Penta TWD1682GE platform#
The TWD1682GE defines the large-displacement Tier 4 Final category:
- 16.12L inline-six with water-cooled charge-air cooler — the TWD designation indicates H2O-to-Air CAC, versus air-to-air on the TAD models
- SCR/DPF/DOC triple aftertreatment with 52.8-gallon DEF tank — nearly three times the capacity of VD100-300 DEF tanks
- 6.60% DEF consumption — highest absolute DEF throughput in the T4F lineup
- 550 kWe standby / 500 kWe prime — divergent ratings unlike the smaller T4F models
- Stamford HCI534E/HCI534F alternator with ±0.50% voltage regulation
- EPA Tier 4 Final + EU Stage 5 dual certification
- 4,921 ft altitude ceiling
- 160 x 84 x 118 in enclosure — significantly larger than VD100-300 models
Variant selection guide#
- VD300-04FT4 (300 kW standby/prime, Volvo TAD1383VE 12.8L I-6, Tier 4 Final) — smaller platform, 120 x 66 x 91 in. Choose if 300 kW meets the load study and the smaller footprint is required.
- VD600-04FT4 (600 kW standby / 570 kW prime, Volvo TWD1683GE 16.12L I-6, Tier 4 Final) — same engine family, higher output, structural steel base. Choose for loads above 550 kW standby or 500 kW prime.
When to spec the VD550-04FT4#
- 400-550 kW emergency standby loads, or 400-500 kW prime power loads on diesel
- Jurisdictions requiring Tier 4 Final or EU Stage 5 emissions compliance
- Large industrial, municipal, and healthcare facilities
- Sites at any elevation up to 4,921 ft with adequate space for the 160 x 84 in footprint
