Overview#
The Blue Star VD600-04FT4 is a 600-kilowatt standby / 570-kilowatt prime EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage 5 diesel generator — the highest-output model in the Blue Star Tier 4 Final lineup. It is built around the Volvo Penta TWD1683GE, a 16.12-liter inline-six with water-cooled charge-air cooling rated 932 HP at 1800 RPM. This is a current-production active model.
The VD600-04FT4 shares its footprint and basic architecture with the VD550-04FT4, with key distinctions: structural steel base frame (vs formed steel), voltage-dependent alternator selection, and a 5,000W 240V jacket water heater (the largest in the T4F lineup).
The Volvo Penta TWD1683GE platform#
The TWD1683GE is the top of the Blue Star Tier 4 Final engine lineup:
- 16.12L inline-six with water-cooled charge-air cooler — 932 HP (695 kWm) at 1800 RPM
- SCR/DPF/DOC triple aftertreatment with 52.8-gallon DEF tank
- 6.00% DEF consumption — lower rate than the VD550 (6.60%) despite higher output, reflecting combustion optimization at this displacement
- 600 kWe standby / 570 kWe prime — 30 kW spread between ratings
- Voltage-dependent alternator: Stamford HCI534F (480V/600V) or Stamford S6L1D-C (208V/240V)
- Structural steel base frame — upgraded from the formed steel base on VD100-550 models
- 5,000W 240V jacket water heater — the largest JWH in the lineup, reflecting the increased coolant mass of the 16.12L engine
- Maximum exhaust back-pressure post-catalyst: 40.0 in H2O — critical installation specification
- EPA Tier 4 Final + EU Stage 5 dual certification
- 4,921 ft altitude ceiling
Variant selection guide#
- VD550-04FT4 (550 kW standby / 500 kW prime, Volvo TWD1682GE 16.12L I-6, Tier 4 Final) — same platform, formed steel base, 325 lbs lighter. Choose if loads fall within 500 kW prime.
- For loads above 600 kW standby, multiple-unit paralleling is required — consult with Blue Star for paralleling configurations.
When to spec the VD600-04FT4#
- 450-600 kW emergency standby loads, or 450-570 kW prime power loads on diesel
- Applications requiring structural steel base frame for seismic or mounting requirements
- Sites where 277/480V or 347/600V three-phase is the primary distribution voltage
- Jurisdictions requiring Tier 4 Final or EU Stage 5 emissions compliance
- Sites at any elevation up to 4,921 ft with adequate space for the 160 x 84 in footprint and 13,425 lb floor loading
