Overview#
The Gillette SPHD-9000 is a 900-kilowatt stationary diesel standby generator on Hyundai's DP222CCS V12 — the only Hyundai-powered model in Gillette's diesel lineup. At 21.9L displacement producing 900 kW (1,334 bhp), the Hyundai DP222 achieves remarkably high power density compared to the Mitsubishi S-series. Stamford S6DD311 alternator with shunt excitation, DSE 7420 MKII controller.
The SPHD-9000 fills a unique 900 kW output point between the SPMI-8000 (800 kW Mitsubishi) and SPMI-1M (1,000 kW Mitsubishi), offering a lighter and more compact alternative at a specific output tier.
Hyundai DP222 — high power density from 21.9L#
The most notable characteristic of the SPHD-9000 is its power density:

The Hyundai V12 delivers 100 kW more output from 35% less displacement at half the weight. The tradeoff: higher specific loading per liter means the engine operates at higher thermal and mechanical stress.
Important certification differences#
The SPHD-9000 differs from the SPMI series in several certification areas:
- No UL 2200 — carries UL 1446 and UL 508, but not the UL 2200 generator set listing that many commercial specs mandate
- Shunt excitation (not PMG) — the Stamford S6DD311 uses conventional shunt excitation, which may have slower voltage recovery under severe transients compared to PMG
- ASCE 7-05 at 180 MPH — the older wind load standard vs. ASCE 7-22 at 200 MPH on the SPMI series
For projects requiring UL 2200, PMG excitation, or current wind load certification, the SPMI-8000 or SPMI-1M are the appropriate alternatives despite the weight penalty.

The Hyundai DP222 is less common in our territory than Mitsubishi S-series or Caterpillar 3500 series engines at this power class. Hyundai's parts availability in North America is growing but not as established as Mitsubishi's network.
