Overview#
The Gillette SPVD-7000 is a 700-kilowatt stationary diesel standby generator — Gillette's largest Volvo-powered unit and the ceiling of the SPVD series. The TWD1744GE is a 17.26L turbocharged inline-6 with water-to-air aftercooling, producing 1,020 bhp at 439 psi BMEP. Stamford S6DC311 alternator, Basler DGC-2020 controller.
Above 700 kW, Gillette transitions to Mitsubishi engines (SPMI series starting at 800 kW).
The Volvo-to-Mitsubishi transition at 700 kW#
The SPVD-7000 is the boundary between Volvo and Mitsubishi in the Gillette lineup:
| Spec | SPVD-7000 (Volvo) | SPMI-8000 (Mitsubishi) |
|---|---|---|
| Standby kW | 700 | 800 |
| Engine | TWD1744GE I6 | S12A2 V12 |
| Displacement | 17.26L | 33.9L |
| Architecture | Inline-6 | V12 |
| Open weight | 11,718 lbs | 18,950 lbs |
| Controller | Basler DGC-2020 | DSE 7420 MKII |
The Volvo achieves 700 kW from 17.26L in 6 cylinders — remarkable specific output. The Mitsubishi at 800 kW uses nearly double the displacement in a V12 configuration, running at much lower specific loading (less stressed per liter). For facilities growing beyond 700 kW, the Mitsubishi platform offers more headroom within the engine's design envelope.
Our service experience#
The TWD1744GE at 700 kW is the highest specific loading Volvo inline-6 we service (439 psi BMEP). At this output, turbocharger condition and water-to-air aftercooler performance are mission-critical service items. The engine does not forgive deferred maintenance at this calibration — annual full-load testing and semi-annual fuel system service are non-negotiable. We service this same Volvo platform on Blue Star VD700 generators with identical procedures.
