Overview#

The Generac SD200 is a 200-kilowatt diesel standby generator powered by an Iveco/FPT 8.7-liter turbocharged and aftercooled inline-six engine. Rated at 200 kW standby and 180 kW prime, it sits in the mid-range of Generac's SD Series industrial diesel lineup and serves commercial, healthcare, and light-industrial standby applications.

Generac pairs the 8.7L Iveco with their 520 mm alternator featuring Class H insulation, permanent magnet excitation, and sealed bearings. The Digital H control panel includes full system monitoring, NFPA 110 Level I and II programmability, Modbus communications, RS-232/485, and a predictive maintenance algorithm. The 200 kW class is one of the most commonly specified power levels for commercial standby applications.

Stepping up from the 6.7L to the 8.7L#

The SD200 moves from the 6.7L engine in the SD100 to the 8.7L platform, gaining two liters of displacement and jumping from 152 hp to 320 hp at rated kW. Despite the significant power increase, the genset footprint remains identical at 128 x 54 inches, making the SD200 a direct upgrade path for sites that outgrow a 100 kW unit without requiring a larger equipment pad. The 8.7L uses electronic common rail fuel injection (versus mechanical injection on the 6.7L), providing improved fuel efficiency at partial loads and quieter combustion.

Our service experience#

The SD200 is among the most commonly deployed Generac diesel units we service in Northern California. At 14.8 gph full load, it provides good fuel economy for the 200 kW class. The permanent magnet excitation system on the 520 mm alternator eliminates the need for exciter windings, reducing one potential failure mode. We recommend exercising the unit weekly and verifying the 120 VAC coolant heater function at every service visit. Heat rejection to coolant at 545,646 BTU/hr requires proper ventilation -- verify inlet air capacity of at least 8,872 CFM when sizing the generator room.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Generac SD200 use?
The Generac SD200 uses an Iveco/FPT 8.7-liter, six-cylinder in-line turbocharged and aftercooled diesel engine running at 1800 RPM. The engine has a bore of 117 mm (4.61 in) and stroke of 135 mm (5.31 in) with a 16.5:1 compression ratio. It uses electronic common rail fuel injection and is EPA Certified for Stationary Emergency applications. The crankcase holds 28 liters (29.57 qt) of oil.
What is the fuel consumption of the Generac SD200?
At standby rating, the SD200 consumes 14.8 gallons per hour at full load (100%), 11.9 gph at 75% load, 8.3 gph at 50% load, and 4.4 gph at 25% load. Total fuel pump flow (combustion plus return) is 26 gph. The fuel pump lift is rated at 3 feet.
What voltages are available for the SD200?
The SD200 is available in single-phase 120/240 VAC (833 amps at 1.0 pf) and three-phase configurations: 120/208 VAC (694 amps), 120/240 VAC (601 amps), 277/480 VAC (301 amps), and 346/600 VAC (241 amps), all at 0.8 power factor. The alternator is a 12-lead design with permanent magnet excitation.
What are the dimensions and weight of the SD200?
The open-set SD200 (no base tank) measures 128 x 54 x 58 inches and weighs approximately 4,465 lbs. Sub-base fuel tank options provide runtimes from 10 to 90 hours. Enclosure options include standard steel/aluminum, Level 1 acoustic, and Level 2 acoustic configurations.
