Overview#
The Blue Star VD600-01 is a 600-kilowatt EPA Tier 2 diesel standby generator. It is a workhorse industrial / large-commercial size — typical for hospital main backup, mid-size data centers, large hotels, manufacturing plants, and high-rise residential. Blue Star packages the same Volvo Penta TWD1643GE engine that Kohler uses on the 600REOZVB and that several other major OEMs build onto in this class.
Standby is rated 600 kWe; prime rating is 550 kWe for unlimited-runtime applications where Tier 2 emissions are still permitted (typically continuous-duty industrial use outside CARB-aligned jurisdictions).
The Volvo Penta TWD1643GE platform#
The TWD1643GE is one of the most widely deployed industrial diesels in the 500-700 kW class:
- 16.12L inline-six — large-displacement, moderate-RPM (1800) design favors longevity over peak power density
- Turbocharged with water-to-air aftercooling — supports tight load acceptance steps required for hospital and data center applications
- Common across multiple OEMs — shared with Kohler 600REOZVB, MTU, and other system integrators, which means abundant service literature and parts availability through Volvo Penta's industrial channel
Voltage flexibility — 208V to 4160V#
This unit's ability to be configured for 4160V medium-voltage output is one of its meaningful differentiators in the 600 kW class. Large healthcare and industrial campuses often distribute at 4160V; coupling the genset directly to the MV bus eliminates a 600V→4160V step-up transformer and reduces the electrical room footprint.
Sizing and load behavior#
- 600 kW continuous emergency loads with NFPA 110 Level 1 service when configured with the appropriate alarms, battery monitoring, and fuel supply
- Step-load capability sufficient for hospital and elevator-rich high-rise applications
- Single-engine, single-alternator package — simpler than a paralleled pair of 300 kW units, lower installed cost for the kW
Our service experience#
The Volvo Penta TWD1643GE is one of the platforms we know best — it is the same engine on Kohler 600REOZVB units we have serviced for years. The Blue Star packaging is solid: enclosures are well-fabricated, the Basler DGC-2020HD is a known controller platform, and parts cross-reference cleanly to Volvo's industrial catalog. The main consideration in our market is dealer access — Blue Star does not have a Bay Area dealer presence the way Cat and Kohler do, so we recommend customers pre-stage critical spares (filters, glow plugs, alternator controls) on-site.
