Overview#
The Blue Star VD230-01 is a 230-kilowatt EPA Tier 3 diesel standby generator built around the Volvo Penta TAD851GE inline-six. It sits in the mid-range of Blue Star's Volvo Penta diesel lineup — between the 200 kW class (JD200-01) and the 250 kW VD250-03. This is a current-production active model.
Blue Star Power Systems, Inc. is a Minnesota-based generator-set integrator acquired by DEUTZ AG in August 2024. The VD230-01 represents the updated component platform: DSE DCP7310 controller and Stamford UCDI alternator, replacing the Basler DGC-2020 and Marathon alternators found on earlier Blue Star models.
The Volvo Penta TAD851GE platform#
The TAD851GE is a 7.7-liter inline-six from Volvo Penta's industrial diesel family. It shares bore and stroke dimensions with the smaller TAD572VE (5.13L I-4) and the larger TAD1373VE (12.8L I-6), giving Blue Star a consistent Volvo Penta engine family across the 125-700 kW range.
- 7.7L inline-six — moderate displacement for the 200-250 kW class, favoring longevity over peak power density
- Turbocharged with charge-air cooling for tight transient response under step-load conditions
- Tier 3 certified for stationary emergency standby — no aftertreatment required, which simplifies maintenance versus Tier 4 Final units
- Electronic unit injection with Volvo Penta EMS for precise fuel metering and diagnostics via CAN bus
Variant selection guide#
The VD230-01 occupies a unique kW point in Blue Star's catalog. Nearby options:
- VD250-03 (250 kW, Volvo Penta) — same TAD engine family at a higher rating, 20 kW more standby capacity for slightly higher fuel consumption. Choose the VD250-03 if your load study shows peak demand between 230-250 kW.
- JD200-01 (200 kW, John Deere) — different engine OEM at a lower kW point. John Deere's agricultural service network may offer faster parts access in rural NorCal locations.
- PD200-01 (200 kW, Perkins) — Perkins-powered alternative at the lower kW boundary. Perkins parts availability through Caterpillar's dealer channel.
For sites requiring Tier 4 Final emissions (California new installations, non-emergency prime), the VD200-04FT4 or VD250-04FT4 are the closest Tier 4 equivalents.
When to spec the VD230-01#
- 180-230 kW continuous emergency standby loads on diesel fuel
- Mid-size commercial facilities: full-service hotels, large retail, municipal buildings, school campuses
- Sites where Tier 3 is permitted (most US jurisdictions for stationary emergency standby)
- Buyers who prefer Volvo Penta's industrial service channel over John Deere or Perkins
- Applications requiring 120/240V single-phase output alongside three-phase (the VD230-01 supports both)
