Overview#
The Blue Star GM60-02P is a 55-kilowatt prime / 60-kilowatt standby natural gas and LP generator powered by the PSI 5.7L NA — an eight-cylinder V8 naturally aspirated engine from Power Solutions International, configured for continuous prime power service. The "-P" designation identifies this as a prime-rated model with three-way catalyst/silencer, 105°C temperature rise, and a 1-year / 1,500-hour prime warranty.
Blue Star Power Systems pairs the 5.7L engine with a Stamford UCI224E alternator and DSE DCP7310 controller. The OPU footprint is 80 × 42 × 64 in at 2,025 lbs — 4 inches wider and 12 inches taller than the GM60-02 OPU to accommodate the catalyst/silencer and prime-duty components. Level 1 through Level 3 enclosures are available.
Prime Rating: Size to 55 kWe for Continuous Operation#
The GM60-02P carries two ratings: 55 kWe prime and 60 kWe standby. For any application involving continuous or unlimited-hours operation — base load, peak shaving, prime power in isolated sites — the 55 kWe prime rating governs. The 60 kWe standby rating applies to emergency backup use only.
This 5 kWe spread (from 60 kWe standby to 55 kWe prime) is consistent across Blue Star's prime gaseous product line, reflecting the thermal derating required for sustained operation vs. short-duration emergency standby. Do not size a continuous-duty load requirement to the 60 kWe standby figure.
Catalyst/Silencer Exhaust Aftertreatment#
The GM60-02P's three-way catalyst/silencer is the key distinction from the standby GM60-02. The catalyst oxidizes CO and unburned hydrocarbons and reduces NOx — required for EPA stationary spark ignition compliance at the continuous operating hours that prime power applications accumulate. All Blue Star prime-rated gaseous generators include this assembly. Its presence also affects the OPU footprint and the exhaust connection dimensions; confirm both before installation.
When to specify the GM60-02P#
- Continuous prime power at 55 kWe on natural gas or LP (base load, off-grid, backup with frequent cycling)
- Applications requiring EPA prime-duty stationary spark ignition compliance
- Sites where the 80 × 42 in OPU width can be accommodated
- Projects where parts and training commonality with the GM60-02 standby fleet is a service advantage
Our service experience#
Prime-duty gaseous generators accumulate hours continuously and require disciplined PM intervals. The PSI 5.7L at 55 kWe prime is a reliable platform when maintained properly: catalyst inspection, spark plug replacement at OEM intervals, coolant condition, fuel pressure verification at full load (709 ft³/hr NG at 11.0 in. W.C.), and air filter maintenance. The OPU's 64-inch height with the catalyst assembly requires clearance planning above the unit — confirm overhead clearance at the installation site before delivery.
