Overview#
The Blue Star GM60-02 is a 60-kilowatt natural gas and LP standby generator powered by the PSI 5.7L NA — an eight-cylinder V8 naturally aspirated engine from Power Solutions International. It is rated at 60 kWe standby on both natural gas and LP across all voltage configurations from 120/240V single-phase through 347/600V three-phase.
Blue Star Power Systems pairs the 5.7L engine with a Stamford UCI224E alternator and DSE DCP7310 controller on a formed steel base. The OPU footprint is 80 × 38 × 52 in at 1,900 lbs — the same length and width as the GM50-03, sharing the PSI 5.7L V8 platform. Level 1, 2, and 3 enclosures are available with sound levels from 79 dBA (OPU full load) down to 64 dBA (Level 3).
Same Platform, Higher Output#
The GM60-02 and GM50-03 use the same PSI 5.7L V8 engine and the same 80 × 38 in OPU footprint. The 10 kWe gain from 50 to 60 kWe comes from a higher fuel delivery calibration rather than a different engine. This makes the two models footprint-compatible and parts-common — a useful consideration when selecting between them based on load requirements. The tradeoff is that the GM60-02 runs the engine closer to its output ceiling, which results in a more restrictive deration profile (1,200 ft vs. 4,200 ft altitude threshold).
Standby vs Prime: GM60-02 vs GM60-02P#
The GM60-02 is a standby-rated unit. For continuous or unlimited-hours operation, the GM60-02P is the correct selection at 55 kWe prime. The GM60-02P includes a catalyst/silencer and 105°C prime temperature rise. Do not use the GM60-02 standby rating for base load, peak shaving, or off-grid prime power applications.
When to specify the GM60-02#
- 55–60 kW natural gas or LP standby at commercial, medium commercial, school, multi-family, or light industrial sites
- Sites at or below 1,200 ft elevation at ambient temperatures at or below 77°F (derate at higher conditions)
- Applications requiring 208-600V single- or three-phase output on both fuel types with equal output
- Installations where parts commonality with the GM50-03 is a service advantage
Our service experience#
The PSI 5.7L at 60 kWe operates closer to its output ceiling than the GM50-03 at 50 kWe — verify fuel supply at commissioning. At 773 ft³/hr NG at 11.0 in. W.C., the supply regulator and meter sizing must be confirmed before startup. Temperature and altitude deration applies starting at 77°F and 1,200 ft — sites in warm climates or at moderate elevation should calculate derated output. Annual full-load testing and spark plug inspection remain the top maintenance priorities for naturally aspirated gaseous standby units of this type.
