Series Overview#
The Hipower HYW Series is a four-model compact Yanmar diesel standby lineup covering 18 to 45 kW. The series' defining characteristic is its integrated weatherproof enclosure, which packages the generator set for permanent outdoor installation without requiring a dedicated generator room, enclosure building, or weather canopy. This makes the HYW specifically suited to pad-mount installations at parking lot utilities, rooftop equipment yards, and small commercial properties where the only available installation space is outdoors.
All four models use liquid-cooled Yanmar diesel engines — the same engine brand as the parent company — providing reliable standby performance in temperature extremes that would degrade air-cooled alternatives. The 18–25 kW range uses Yanmar three- and four-cylinder engines from the 3TNV82 and 4TNV84 families; the 35 and 45 kW models use the 4TNV98 family for the additional displacement needed at higher output. Single-phase and three-phase output are available across all four models, supporting both residential-style 120/240V services and commercial 120/208V and 277/480V three-phase services.
The HYW occupies the same 18–45 kW output range as the HSY series. The difference is packaging: the HYW's weatherproof outdoor enclosure is the defining selection criterion when permanent outdoor installation is required. Above 45 kW, the HDI series (60 kW and above on FPT, Volvo, and Mitsubishi engines) provides the next level of commercial standby power.
How to Choose#
HYW-20 (18 kW): Entry unit for very small commercial properties and residential-scale outdoor pad installations. Three-cylinder 3TNV82 engine, single and three-phase output.
HYW-25 (25 kW): The first four-cylinder model, suited to small commercial buildings and light industrial controls requiring three-phase 277/480V. Broader load coverage than the HYW-20 with the same compact outdoor footprint.
HYW-35 (35 kW): Mid-range unit for commercial offices, small medical occupancies, and light manufacturing where 35 kW of outdoor-installed standby diesel is the right fit. Uses the 4TNV98 engine family.
HYW-45 (45 kW): Flagship of the series — the largest HYW output, bridging compact Yanmar diesel and the HDI industrial series at 60 kW. Appropriate for larger light-commercial buildings, multi-tenant commercial suites, and small industrial controls where the compact weatherproof package is preferred.
Outdoor vs. indoor installation: If the installation has an equipment room, the HSY series provides the same Yanmar engine platform without the premium for the outdoor enclosure package. If outdoor installation is the only option, the HYW is the appropriate choice.
Common Applications#
- Commercial standby: All four HYW models are rated for commercial standby. Small office buildings, retail properties, and commercial mixed-use where outdoor pad installation is the required method are the primary deployment.
- Light-commercial: All four models carry light-commercial ratings — restaurants, professional services, convenience retail, and small hospitality where 18–45 kW of outdoor-installed diesel backup power covers essential loads.
Service & Maintenance#
All four HYW models share: oil change at 250 hours or 12 months; fuel filter at 500 hours; air filter at 500 hours.
Three failure modes are consistent across the series — the same patterns as the HSY series. Fuel injector nozzle deposits develop from extended low-load or no-load standby; run the generator under a meaningful load (at least 30% of rated output) at least monthly to maintain injector condition. Starting batteries deep-discharge during long standby intervals — float-charge continuously and test annually. Air filter clogging is accelerated in outdoor installations in dusty environments; inspect at 250 hours rather than the 500-hour standard interval if the installation is exposed to construction dust, agricultural particulates, or similar high-dust conditions.
