Overview#
The Blue Star PS40-01P is a 35-kilowatt prime / 40-kilowatt standby natural gas and LP generator powered by the PSI 4.3L six-cylinder V6 — the same engine platform as the PS40-01, configured for continuous-duty prime power service. The "-P" designation identifies this as a prime-rated model with catalyst/silencer exhaust aftertreatment, 105°C temperature rise, and a 1-year / 1,500-hour prime warranty.
Blue Star Power Systems pairs the 4.3L engine with a Stamford UCI224C alternator and DSE DCP7310 controller. The OPU footprint is 80 × 42 × 59 in — 4 inches wider and 9 inches taller than the PS40-01 OPU, accommodating the catalyst/silencer assembly and prime-duty components. At 1,575 lbs, weight is identical to the standby companion.
Prime vs. Standby: Understanding the Rating#
The PS40-01P carries two ratings: 35 kWe prime and 40 kWe standby. The prime rating (35 kWe) is the correct rating for any application requiring continuous or unlimited-hours operation — base load power, peak shaving, or sites without reliable utility. The standby rating (40 kWe) applies to emergency backup use only.
Do not size a continuous-duty application to the 40 kWe standby rating. The PSI 4.3L V6 at 35 kWe prime operates within its continuous thermal envelope; at 40 kWe standby it operates at the short-duration overload limit. Size prime power applications to 35 kWe.
Catalyst/Silencer: Required for Prime Applications#
The three-way catalyst/silencer on the PS40-01P oxidizes CO and unburned hydrocarbons and reduces NOx to EPA stationary spark ignition standards for continuous-duty operation. It is factory-mounted and required for prime power compliance. All Blue Star prime-rated gaseous models include this assembly. Catalyst inspection and periodic replacement should be part of the annual PM schedule — catalyst efficiency degrades over time and is not externally visible without measurement.
When to specify the PS40-01P#
- Continuous or unlimited-hours prime power at 35 kWe on natural gas or LP
- Peak shaving, base load, or off-grid applications where standby-rated units are not suitable
- Sites requiring EPA stationary spark ignition compliance at continuous-duty hours
- Applications where the 80 × 42 in OPU footprint is acceptable
Our service experience#
Prime-rated gaseous generators require more disciplined preventive maintenance than standby units because they accumulate operating hours continuously. Catalyst condition, spark plug wear, fuel pressure stability, and coolant condition are all time-sensitive on the PS40-01P. The catalyst requires replacement at OEM-specified intervals — skipping this shortens the engine's working life due to back-pressure buildup. Gas pressure must be verified at full prime load: 550 ft³/hr NG at 11.0 in. W.C. is the sustained demand. Utility gas regulators often undersized for prime generator demand should be addressed at installation.
