Overview#
The Blue Star NG1050-01 is a 1,050-kilowatt natural gas / LP standby generator built on the PSI 53-liter V16 platform. It is rated 1,050 kWe standby on natural gas and 700 kWe on LP at 60 Hz / 1800 RPM. Available in 480V, 600V, and 4160V three-phase configurations only — no 208V or 240V options. UL 2200 listing applies through 600VAC; the 4160V configuration is not UL-listed.
The PSI 53L V16#
The PSI 53L is a 52.3-liter (3,192 cu in) V16 turbocharged-aftercooled spark-ignition engine:
- 1,589 bHp (1,185 kWm) at 1800 RPM standby
- 16-cylinder Vee — four more cylinders than the 40L V12, using the same bore (5.91 in) and stroke (7.28 in)
- 601 GPM water pump — highest flow in the Blue Star gaseous lineup
- Large fluid systems: 45.2 gal oil, 65.4 gal system coolant
- 67,300 CFM ventilation requirement — size the mechanical room accordingly
- EPA Stationary Spark Ignition certified under 40 CFR 60 Subpart JJJJ
Voltage configurations#
| Voltage | Phase | Alternator | Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 277/480V | 3 | Stamford S6L1D-F | 4-lead WYE |
| 347/600V | 3 | Stamford S6L1D-F | 4-lead WYE |
| 4160V | 3 | Stamford MVWI734F | 6-lead WYE |
All configurations carry 125°C standby temperature rise and ±0.5% voltage regulation. UL 2200, cUL, and CSA certifications apply through 600VAC only. The 4160V configuration is not UL-listed.
Infrastructure requirements#
At 1,050 kW, infrastructure demands are substantially larger than sub-megawatt units:
- Fuel pressure: 30 in. WC sustained under full standby load (vs 11 in. WC for most smaller Blue Star gaseous models)
- Ventilation: 67,300 CFM — verify mechanical room design with this value
- Cooling: 3,095,580 BTU/hr coolant heat rejection; 1,277,400 BTU/hr radiated
When to spec the NG1050-01#
- 850 kW–1,050 kW standby loads on natural gas or LP (three-phase 480V, 600V, or 4160V)
- Data centers, campuses, or large hospital non-critical loads requiring megawatt-class gaseous standby
- Sites with 4160V distribution where UL-listing at 4160V is not required by the AHJ
Our service experience#
The PSI 53L V16 is a large and specialized platform. At 16 cylinders, scheduled maintenance (spark plugs, ignition coils) involves significantly more labor than smaller engines. The 45.2 gal oil system requires a planned drain and capture strategy. Parts lead time from PSI is the primary service risk for this low-volume platform in most territories.
