Overview#
The Cat G3512 is a 750-kilowatt natural gas generator set — Caterpillar's V-12 gas engine platform for continuous power, cogeneration, and distributed generation applications. Unlike diesel standby generators that sit idle waiting for utility failures, the G3512 is built to run: continuous ratings with unlimited annual hours make it a baseload power production machine.
The G3512 shares the proven 3500 series engine block architecture with Cat's diesel 3512, adapted for spark-ignited natural gas combustion with prechamber ignition, electronic fuel control, and the ADEM A4 engine management system. At 51.8 liters across 12 cylinders with turbocharged aspiration, the G3512 delivers the power density and thermal efficiency that makes gas-fired distributed generation economically viable.
Gas vs diesel: a different maintenance paradigm#
Natural gas generators require a fundamentally different maintenance approach than diesel units. The G3512's primary wear items are spark plugs (replaced every 4,000 hours), ignition coils, and prechamber components — not fuel injectors and filters. Oil changes use specialized natural gas engine oil (NGEO) at 1,000-hour intervals, and the absence of diesel particulate matter means cleaner oil and longer engine life between overhauls (40,000 hours versus 20,000 for comparable diesel platforms).
The G3512H variant introduces hydrogen blending capability — up to 25% H2 by volume — positioning the platform for the energy transition. Facilities that install a G3512 today can blend increasing percentages of green hydrogen as supply becomes available, reducing carbon intensity without replacing the prime mover.
Our service experience#
Gas generators in our Northern California territory serve cogeneration plants, landfill gas projects, and commercial facilities with favorable gas rates or sustainability mandates. The G3512 platform requires technicians with gas-engine-specific training — spark plug gapping, prechamber inspection, and gas train calibration are skills that differ from standard diesel service. We see the best reliability from installations with clean, dry natural gas supply and consistent load profiles; variable-load applications require more frequent spark plug and ignition system attention. Cat's ADEM A4 controller provides excellent diagnostic capability for remote monitoring of individual cylinder performance.
