Overview#
The Cat C32B is a 1,500-kilowatt diesel standby generator -- Caterpillar's newest entry in the 1.5 MW class. Designated as the D1500 in Cat's product lineup, it uses a 32.1-liter V-12 engine with Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) and the ADEM A5 electronic governor. At 1500 ekW standby, the C32B delivers 50% more power than the original C32 platform it evolves from.
The C32B is certified to EPA Tier 2 for stationary emergency use and features Cat's latest Energy Control System (ECS) / GCCP controller platform. Standard features include 100% block load acceptance per NFPA 110, ISO 8528-5 G2 load acceptance compliance, and a 24-month / 1,000-hour warranty with 5 years of complimentary Platinum Extended Service Coverage.
The D1500: 1.5 MW from a V-12#
The C32B represents Cat's answer to the data center industry's demand for higher power density. Where the original C32 topped out at 1000-1250 kW, the C32B pushes 1500 kW from a V-12 footprint (200 x 90 inches). This matters in data center applications where generator room space directly affects the cost per megawatt of backup power.
Key specifications from the OEM spec sheet:
- Bore x stroke: 145 mm x 162 mm (5.7 in x 6.4 in)
- Displacement: 32.1 L (1,959 in3)
- Compression ratio: 14.0:1
- Fuel system: Electronic Unit Injection (EUI)
- Fuel consumption at full load: 101.9 gal/hr (385.9 L/hr)
- Exhaust gas temperature: 857.5 degrees F at full load
- Motor starting capability: 4160V medium voltage available
The medium voltage options (2400V, 4160V) with both random-wound and form-wound alternator configurations make the C32B suitable for large campus and utility interconnection installations.
Our service experience#
The C32B is Cat's newest large diesel platform and is increasingly specified in data center projects across Northern California. At 21,411 lbs, the unit requires substantial structural support and rigging planning. The EUI fuel system is a proven Cat technology, but the higher power output means thermal management is critical -- ensure adequate ventilation with nearly 49,000 CFM of radiator airflow. The ECS/GCCP controller platform is a significant upgrade from EMCP 4 and supports advanced paralleling, Ethernet connectivity, and remote monitoring out of the box.
