Overview#

The Waukesha L7044GSI is the workhorse of the VHP line — a 12-cylinder V engine producing 835-1,253 kW on natural gas depending on the rating and combustion configuration. The current Series Five version features INNIO's advanced ESM engine management controls and emPact emission control system. This is a prime power and continuous duty engine designed to run 8,000+ hours per year — it is not a standby or backup unit.

The L7044GSI is widely deployed in landfill gas-to-energy projects, municipal CHP plants, industrial cogeneration, and large institutional power systems. Available in both rich-burn (with three-way catalyst) and lean-burn configurations, the engine can operate on pipeline natural gas, landfill gas, digester gas, and other alternative fuel compositions. The 4160V output option enables direct connection to medium-voltage distribution systems common in large industrial and utility-scale installations.

OnPoint provides full maintenance and overhaul services for Waukesha L7044GSI installations across all series generations (Series Two through Series Five). The VHP platform's long production history means a deep knowledge base and robust parts supply chain exist for both current-production and legacy units.

Estimate runtime for the Waukesha L7044GSI

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

13,156,500 BTU/hr13156.5 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Waukesha L7044GSI run on landfill gas?
Yes. The L7044GSI is widely deployed in landfill gas-to-energy projects. It is available in both rich-burn and lean-burn configurations and can operate on landfill gas, digester gas, and other alternative fuel compositions. Fuel system tuning accommodates varying BTU content and contaminant levels.
What is the overhaul interval for the Waukesha L7044GSI?
The L7044GSI has a major overhaul interval of approximately 60,000 hours, which is one of the longest in the gas engine industry. With proper maintenance including spark plug changes at 2,000 hours and oil changes at 500 hours, these engines deliver exceptional long-term value in continuous-duty applications.
