Series Overview#
The Olympian GEP Series is Caterpillar's value-tier diesel generator line, spanning 15 to 500 kW. The "GEP" designation stands for Generator Electric Perkins — these units use Perkins diesel engines rather than Caterpillar's own engine platforms, enabling a lower price point while retaining access to the Caterpillar dealer network for sales, service, and parts support. The Olympian brand occupies the commercial standby and light industrial segment where Cat's premium C-Series and 3500 Series generators would be over-specified or over-budget.
GEP Series generators use Perkins 400 Series (2.2L), 1100 Series (4.4L), and 1100 Series (7.0L) engines across the range, paired with brushless alternators and electronic governors. The smaller models (GEP22) offer single-phase and three-phase output for light commercial applications, while the larger models (GEP150, GEP220) deliver three-phase 277/480V power suitable for mid-size commercial buildings, retail centers, and light industrial facilities.
The Perkins engine platform used across the GEP Series benefits from high production volumes across agricultural, construction, and industrial equipment markets worldwide. This broad market penetration ensures strong parts availability and widespread technician familiarity. For facilities that need reliable backup power without the premium cost of a Cat-engined generator, the Olympian GEP Series provides an established, well-supported option.
