Overview#
The Cat CG132B-16 is the top-of-range 800 kW variant in the CG132B product family, using 16 cylinders in a V16 configuration to deliver the maximum output from the CG132B cylinder module. At 800 kW continuous duty, this unit bridges the gap between mid-range industrial gas generators and the larger MW-class machines in the CG260 series.
The 4160V medium-voltage output option makes the CG132B-16 particularly useful for facilities with existing medium-voltage distribution infrastructure. Eliminating the step-up transformer reduces installation cost, footprint, and transformer losses.
District energy and large-scale CHP#
The 800 kW scale positions the CG132B-16 as a central plant unit for district energy systems serving multiple buildings, industrial process plants, and large healthcare or university campuses. At this scale, multiple CG132B-16 units can be installed in parallel to achieve N+1 redundancy while maintaining continuous-duty operation across the array.
CHP integration at 800 kW produces substantial recoverable thermal energy. For district heating applications, jacket water heat recovery alone can supply significant hot water or low-pressure steam loads. Combined with exhaust heat recovery, total fuel utilization approaching 80% is achievable on well-matched loads.
Fuel flexibility#
The CG132B-16 operates on:
- Pipeline natural gas -- full 800 kW continuous output
- Biogas -- landfill gas and anaerobic digester gas with appropriate fuel conditioning
- Hydrogen blends -- up to approximately 25% H2 by volume for decarbonization roadmaps
- Low-BTU gas -- subject to engineering review and application-specific derating
Industrial-grade reliability#
The CG132B platform is designed for tens of thousands of hours between major overhauls in continuous-duty industrial service. For central plant applications where uptime is directly tied to facility operations, the extended overhaul interval and Cat's global parts and service network are key selection criteria.
Our service experience#
800 kW continuous-duty gas engines are central plant assets requiring structured asset management. We recommend establishing a formal maintenance program including oil analysis at every oil change, cylinder pressure trending, and vibration baseline measurements at commissioning. Medium-voltage installations (4160V) require coordination with qualified electrical contractors for switchgear, metering, and utility interconnect -- plan this scope early in the project timeline.
