Overview#
The Hipower HSY-20 is a 19 kW diesel standby generator in the HSY Series, powered by a Yanmar 3TNV82-family diesel engine. At 19 kW, the HSY-20 covers the critical load requirements of small clinics, dental offices, small restaurants, and light-retail occupancies where HVAC, refrigeration, and point-of-sale systems must remain operational during grid outages. Three-phase 277/480V capability makes it versatile across commercial occupancy types. Built at Hipower's Olathe, Kansas manufacturing facility.
Yanmar Reliability#
Yanmar engines in the 3TNV82 class have a long track record in demanding applications including marine generators, compact construction equipment, and industrial pump drives — all environments where the engine must perform reliably under load without daily attention. That pedigree is particularly valuable in standby service, where the engine sits unused for extended periods and must start under full load within seconds of an outage. Yanmar of America's parts and dealer network provides broad coverage for maintenance and emergency repair.
Right-Sized for Small Commercial#
The 19 kW output of the HSY-20 addresses the common small commercial scenario where the total critical load is 14–17 kW — enough to support an essential panel, refrigeration, and HVAC without the footprint or capital cost of a 25–30 kW unit. Proper load matching is important for diesel longevity: an engine running at 70–80% of rated capacity burns efficiently and resists wet-stacking, while a chronically underloaded diesel accumulates unburned fuel deposits that shorten service life.
Service and Maintenance#
Standard Yanmar maintenance for standby service calls for oil and filter changes at 250 hours or 12 months. Air filter replacement at 500 hours; fuel filter at 500 hours. Float-charge battery maintenance is non-negotiable for standby generators: a battery maintainer prevents the deep discharge that causes most no-start failures. Monthly exercise runs under at least 30% rated load are recommended to flush the fuel system, verify transfer switch operation, and confirm the generator is ready for an actual outage.
Our Service Experience#
PowerGen services the 19–20 kW Yanmar class throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, from small clinics on the Peninsula to specialty food businesses in San Jose. Our pre-installation load surveys routinely identify clients who have been quoted 30–40 kW units when their critical loads actually justify a 19–20 kW machine — at significantly lower installed cost and with better long-term engine health. The HSY-20 is a unit we frequently recommend once the load data is in hand.
